In order to maintain a direct relationship with players and to avoid Google Play’s fees, Epic Games will release the Android version of Fortnite Battle Royale through its own website.
Epic spoke with The Verge to confirm earlier rumors that Fortnite will not be coming to the Google Play Store. Instead, it will be available for download through the company’s official website via an installer program that will bring the game to compatible Android devices.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney says the main reason for circumventing the Google Play Store is to maintain a direct relationship with players, similarly to how Epic offers Fortnite on PC and Mac through its own launcher instead of through Steam. Epic reportedly went through the App Store to make Fortnite available for iOS devices because of how much more closed Apple’s ecosystem is.
